Support the brave women and men in Suwayda who are protesting against Assad’s crimes and calling for a free, democratic, multicultural and unified Syria. Ask your MP to condemn in the strongest terms attacks by the Syrian regime on peaceful protesters.

A growing protest movement in Syria is reinvigorating calls for the overthrow of the Assad regime. These protests, centred around ‘Dignity Square’ in the southwest city of Suwayda, are now in their fourth week. They are the largest and most sustained protests in Syria for years.

On Wednesday 13th September the Syrian regime started directly firing on protesters, following a campaign of arrests in other cities to prevent growing popular movements. Once again proving that Bashar Assad only knows the language of violence and persecution.

The attacks on protesters are an extremely dangerous development, which the United Kingdom must condemn.

At a pivotal time in Syria’s history, when some cynical states are normalising ties with the Syrian regime after twelve years of isolation for crimes against humanity, the protesters are appealing for global solidarity.

Salma (pseudonym) an activist, university student and founder of the Tal3at Soriat women's movement shared this message:

“For me, the peaceful protests taking place in my city cannot be separated from the revolution that began in 2011. I lost many of my friends and loved ones during the conflict in Syria. Some of them left the country, some of them are still detained by the Syrian regime and we know nothing about them. Some even died under torture in prisons or were martyred by bombs. Every day I see poverty, forced displacement, and the psychological effects of the regime’s massacres.”

“I ask for your solidarity with all the people in my city, who are bravely stepping onto the streets daily to protest against Assad’s regime, foreign occupation, corruption, nepotism and widespread bribery. The attacks on protesters yesterday are extremely dangerous, but you can give us a bridge that crosses borders. You can put pressure on international bodies to reopen the doors of justice. Use your free voice and let everyone know that in Syria we are not safe or free as long as Assad’s regime is in power.”
