A shocking new low: the UK government is planning to deport asylum seekers, including Syrians, to Rwanda. It’s totally unprecedented and if the flights take off the government will be ripping up its obligations to provide safety for people fleeing war and persecution – and setting a dangerous example for other countries.

Seeking asylum is a basic human right, not a crime. Refugees should be protected no matter where they're from or how they reach the border, not removed to third countries before they’ve even had their cases fully considered in the UK. MPs from across the benches have slammed the government’s ugly policy, which is also being challenged in the courts, but time is running out. Email your MP now to persuade even more MPs to speak out to stop the deportations and reverse this inhumane policy.

Ask your MP to stop asylum seekers being deported to Rwanda

As your constituent, I am appalled by the government's shameful plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, including Syrians, who all came to the UK seeking safety. I urge you to pressure the Prime Minister and Home Secretary to stop all deportations and end this racist, inhumane, and potentially illegal policy.

Seeking asylum is a basic human right, not a crime. Refugees fleeing war and persecution should be protected no matter where they're from or how they reached the border, not removed to third countries before their cases have been fully considered. This cruel policy is a shocking new low and a total abandonment of the UK’s responsibilities towards refugees.

The Rwandan government has a record of arbitrary arrests, enforced disappearance and torture, and the Home Office itself acknowledges that LGBTQI+ refugees could be discriminated against. Those facing deportation are reported to be in severe distress, and some have contemplated suicide.

The Home Office’s own reports highlight that Rwanda does not have adequate capacity to process asylum requests. Asylum seekers in Rwanda often lack access to continuous legal counsel and language interpreters, and a flawed appeal system leaves individuals at greater risk of refoulement after they arrive in Rwanda.

I am dismayed at the appalling manner in which the British government is treating Syrian refugees and other asylum seekers. As my MP,  please do all you can to stop this shameful policy. I look forward to your response.
