“My son Maher and my husband Abdelaziz were disappeared three years ago in Syria. My husband, an activist, had returned from a trip to China and my son Maher went to pick him up from the airport. I was on the phone to Maher and he said “We’re in the car and we’re heading back home now”. Five minutes later I called back. It was a mother’s instinct and I felt something had happened. Their lines were out of service. That was the last I ever heard of Maher or Abdelaziz.” - Fadwa Mahmoud.
Fadwa is one of founders of the Families For Freedom, a women-led Syrian organisation fearlessly campaigning for the release of all those detained and forcibly disappeared by all sides in the conflict.
Fadwa is in Geneva this week outside the Syrian peace talks bringing the message to negotiators that they need to prioritise the freedom of all those peaceful activists held in the country’s dungeons.
Dozens of countries are represented at these international peace talks but none are prioritising the release of detainees. Sign the petition and we’ll make sure your government feels the pressure to meet with Fadwa and the Families for Freedom.
Follow the Families For Freedom on Twitter and Facebook to get the latest from Geneva and their wider work.
If you’re in Geneva, please come down and join for a protest on Wednesday 17th May 2017 outside the United Nations.
The Families For Freedom are supported by Dawlaty, Women Now for Development and The Syria Campaign.
